How to speed up your WordPress website - WP Super Cache

WP Super Cache generates static html files from your dynamic WordPress blog. After a html file is generated your webserver will serve that file instead of processing the comparatively heavier and more expensive WordPress PHP scripts.

99% of your visitors will be served static html files. One cached file can be served thousands of times. Other visitors will be served custom cached files tailored to their visit. If they are logged in, or have left comments those details will be displayed and cached for them.

The plugin serves cached files in 3 ways (ranked by speed):

Expert. The fastest method is by using Apache mod_rewrite (or whatever similar module your web server supports) to serve “supercached” static html files. This completely bypasses PHP and is extremely quick. If your server is hit by a deluge of traffic it is more likely to cope as the requests are “lighter”. This does require the Apache mod_rewrite module (which is probably installed if you have custom permalinks) and a modification of your .htaccess file which is risky and may take down your site if modified incorrectly.

Simple. Supercached static files can be served by PHP and this is the recommended way of using the plugin. The plugin will serve a “supercached” file if it exists and it’s almost as fast as the mod_rewrite method. It’s easier to configure as the .htaccess file doesn’t need to be changed. You still need a custom permalink. You can keep portions of your page dynamic in this caching mode.

WP-Cache caching. This is mainly used to cache pages for known users, URLs with parameters and feeds. Known users are logged in users, visitors who leave comments or those who should be shown custom per-user data. It’s the most flexible caching method and slightly slower. WP-Cache caching will also cache visits by unknown users if supercaching is disabled. You can have dynamic parts to your page in this mode too. This mode is always enabled but you can disable caching for known users, URLs with parameters, or feeds separately. Set the constant “DISABLE_SUPERCACHE” to 1 in your wp-config.php if you want to only use WP-Cache caching.

Embed Google Reviews in WordPress

To embed Google Reviews in WordPress, you’re going to need a few things:

Google Business Profile listing

Google Reviews WordPress plugin

Google Places API key (depending on the plugin)

Google Business Profile Listing

First, you’ll probably want a Google Business Profile listing where customers can leave reviews in the first place.

While you can embed Google Reviews from any listing (even those you don’t control), setting up your own Google Business Profile listing will give you more control over your business’s profile in Google.

Because this profile is where customers will leave the reviews that you embed, you’ll want to put your best foot forward. By creating your profile, you’ll be able to add pictures, edit business details, share updates, and more.

To create your listing, you can go to the Google Business Profile page and follow the instructions.

Alternatively, if Google has already automatically created a listing for your business, you can claim it by clicking the “Own this business?” link that appears on the listing in Google.

Google Reviews WordPress Plugin

Once you have your Google Business Profile listing, you can use a dedicated Google Reviews WordPress plugin to embed reviews from that listing in your WordPress site.

You can find a number of free options that will embed reviews for you, though most also offer premium versions that add more features.

The Shopify WordPress integration works by adding a Shopify Buy Button to your WordPress site. This way, you maintain every aspect of your website (blog, site design, SEO) on WordPress, but you can also sell products and process payments with a simple button from Shopify.

Launch and Configure a WordPress Instance with Amazon Lightsail

Amazon Lightsail is one of the easiest ways to get started with AWS. It offers virtual servers, storage, databases, and networking, plus a cost-effective, monthly plan.

Step 2: Create a WordPress instance in Lightsail

Complete the following steps to get your WordPress instance up and running on Lightsail.

Note: For more information about creating an instance in Lightsail, see Create an Amazon Lightsail instance in the Lightsail documentation.

a. Sign in to the Lightsail console.

b. On the Instances tab of the Lightsail home page, choose Create instance.

c. An AWS Region and Availability Zone is selected for you. Choose Change AWS Region and Availability Zone if you want to create your instance in another location.

d. Choose your instance image.

Choose Linux/Unix as the platform.

Choose WordPress as the blueprint.

e. Choose an instance plan.

A plan includes a machine configuration (RAM, SSD, vCPU) at a low, predictable cost, and data transfer allowance. You can try the $3.50 USD Lightsail plan without charge for three months (up to 750 hours). AWS credits the first three months to your account.

f. Enter a name for your instance and choose Create instance.

 Resource name guidelines:

Must be unique within each AWS Region in your Lightsail account.

Must contain 2 to 255 characters.

Must start and end with an alphanumeric character or number.

Can include alphanumeric characters, numbers, periods, dashes, and underscores.

Step 3: Connect to your instance via SSH and get the password for your WordPress website

The default password to sign in to the administration dashboard of your WordPress website is stored on the instance.

Complete the following steps to connect to your instance using the browser-based SSH client in the Lightsail console, and get the password for the administration dashboard.

Note: For more information, see Getting the application user name and password for your Bitnami instance in Amazon Lightsail.

a. On the Instances tab of the Lightsail home page, choose the SSH quick-connect icon for your WordPress instance.

b. After the browser-based SSH client window opens, enter the following command to retrieve the default application password:

cat $HOME/bitnami_application_password

Copy

c. Make note of the password displayed on the screen. You use it later to sign in to the administration dashboard of your WordPress website.

Step 4: Sign in to the administration dashboard of your WordPress website

Now that you have the password for the administration dashboard of your WordPress website, you can sign in. In the administration dashboard, you can change your user password, install plugins, change the theme of your website, and more.

Complete the following steps to sign in to the administration dashboard of your WordPress website.

Note: For more information, see Getting the application user name and password for your Bitnami instance in Amazon Lightsail.

a. In a browser, go o:

http://PublicIpAddress/wp-login.php

Copy

In the address, replace PublicIpAddress with the public IP address of your WordPress instance. You can get your instance's public IP address from the Lightsail console as shown in the image at the right.

b. Log in to your instance.

In the Username or Email Address box, enter user.

In the Password box, enter the default password obtained earlier in this tutorial.

Choose Log in.

c. You are now signed in to the administration dashboard of your WordPress website where you can perform administrative actions. For more information about administering your WordPress website, see the WordPress Codex in the WordPress documentation.

Step 5: Create a Lightsail static IP address and attach it to your WordPress instance

The default public IP for your WordPress instance changes if you stop and start your instance. A static IP address, attached to an instance, stays the same even if you stop and start your instance.

Complete the following steps to create a static IP address and attach it to your WordPress instance.

Note: For more information, see Create a static IP and attach it to an instance in Amazon Lightsail.

a. On the Instances tab of the Lightsail home page, choose your running WordPress instance.

b. Choose the Networking tab, then choose Create static IP.

c. The static IP location is preselected based on the instance zone that you chose earlier. Select the created WordPress instance from the Attach to an instance dropdown.

d. Name your static IP, then choose Create.

Step 6: Create a Lightsail DNS zone and map a domain to your WordPress instance

Transfer management of your domain's DNS records to Lightsail. This allows you to more easily map a domain to your WordPress instance, and manage more of your website’s resources using the Lightsail console.

Complete the following steps to create a Lightsail DNS zone and map a domain to your WordPress instance.

Note: For more information, see Creating a DNS zone to manage your domain’s DNS records in Amazon Lightsail.

a. On the Networking tab of the Lightsail home page, choose Create DNS zone.

b. Enter your domain, then choose Create DNS zone.

c. Make note of the name server address listed on the page.

You add these name server addresses to your domain name’s registrar to transfer management of your domain’s DNS records to Lightsail.

d. After management of your domain’s DNS records are transferred to Lightsail, add an A record to point the apex of your domain to your WordPress instance, as follows:

You add these name server addresses to your domain name’s registrar to transfer management of your domain’s DNS records to Lightsail.

1. In the DNS zone for your domain, choose Add record.

e. Continue adding the following details to complete pointing the apex of your domain to your WordPress instance:

1. In the Subdomain box, enter an @ symbol to map the apex of your domain (such as example.com) to your instance. The @ symbol explicitly symbolizes that you’re adding an apex record. It is not added as a subdomain.

2. In the Resolves to box, choose the static IP that you attached to the WordPress instance in the previous step of this tutorial.

3. Choose the green save icon.

Allow time for the change to propagate through the internet's DNS before your domain begins routing traffic to your WordPress instance.

China's biggest AI conference kicks off this week

China kicks off its annual World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai this week in a showcase of Beijing's AI ambitions amid a deepening technological rivalry with the US.

The annual event, which is hosted by several government ministries, has attracted China's top AI firms and institutions. The published agenda that runs from Thursday to Saturday is dominated by local firms and speakers, with some big international names conspicuously missing. Most notably, Microsoft-backed OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, will not be in attendance.

With domestic regulators flagging risks about generative AI, ChatGPT and similar services such as Google's Bard are unlikely to be allowed into the Chinese market, making AI another closed garden inside the Great Firewall that could benefit local tech giants.

Mercedes-Benz takes in-car voice control to a new level with ChatGPT

Mercedes-Benz brings ChatGPT to MBUX vehicles for U.S. customers via Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service

Data privacy and IT processes managed by Mercedes-Benz

MBUX beta programme starts June 16, 2023

Mercedes-Benz is further expanding the use of artificial intelligence and integrating it into the voice control of its vehicles as the next step. By adding ChatGPT, voice control via the MBUX Voice Assistant's Hey Mercedes will become even more intuitive. An optional beta programme will start June 16, 2023 in the U.S. for over 900.000 vehicles equipped with the MBUX infotainment system[1].

Customers can participate via the Mercedes me app or directly from the vehicle using the voice command “Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta programme”[2]. The rollout of the beta programme will happen over the air. Mercedes-Benz is integrating ChatGPT through Azure OpenAI Service, leveraging the enterprise-grade capabilities of Microsoft’s cloud and AI platform.

Addition for voice control via Hey Mercedes

Mercedes-Benz MBUX Voice Assistant has already set industry standards and is known for its intuitive operation and a large command portfolio. Driver and passengers can receive sports and weather updates, have questions answered about their surroundings or even control their smart homes.

ChatGPT complements the existing intuitive voice control via Hey Mercedes. While most voice assistants are limited to predefined tasks and responses, ChatGPT leverages a large language model to greatly improve natural language understanding and expand the topics to which it can respond.

Mercedes-Benz combines the best of both worlds, enhancing the validated data of MBUX Voice Assistant with the more natural dialogue format of ChatGPT. Users will experience a voice assistant that not only accepts natural voice commands but can also conduct conversations. Soon, participants who ask the Voice Assistant for details about their destination, to suggest a new dinner recipe, or to answer a complex question, will receive a more comprehensive answer – while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

Mercedes-Benz ensures data privacy

A collaboration with Microsoft enables the integration of ChatGPT. Through Azure OpenAI Service, Mercedes‑Benz is tapping OpenAI’s large-scale generative AI models combined with the enterprise-grade security, privacy and reliability capabilities of Azure. Mercedes-Benz retains complete control over the IT processes in the background. The voice command data collected is stored in the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud, where it is anonymised and analysed.

Google and OpenAI limit A.I. chatbots in Hong Kong

Google and OpenAI have restricted access to their powerful artificial intelligence chatbots in Hong Kong as fears over how China’s influence will impact its ability to maintain an open internet have grown.

While the companies haven’t elaborated on why, the Journal said that observers believe expansion in the city could expose the companies to liability under a Chinese national security law criminalizing criticism of the government.

Hong Kong’s Department of Justice also recently sought to block a pro-democracy song, “Glory to Hong Kong” from being disseminated online and cited 32 instances where it appeared on Google-owned YouTube. Court deliberations are scheduled to continue in the case next month, according to the Journal.

CARREFOUR INTEGRATES OPENAI TECHNOLOGIES AND LAUNCHES A GENERATIVE AI-POWERED SHOPPING EXPERIENCE

Carrefour is deploying three innovative tech solutions based around ChatGPT technology: an advice robot for shopping on carrefour.fr, description sheets for Carrefour brand products on its website and support for purchasing procedures. These solutions are based on OpenAI technologies, particularly GPT-4.

Carrefour has launched Hopla, a chatbot based on ChatGPT which will be integrated into the Carrefour.fr website starting on 8 June. Customers will be able to use this natural-language AI to help them with their daily shopping. They will find it on the site’s home page and will be able to ask it for help in choosing products for their basket, based on their budget, food constraints they may have or menu ideas. The robot can also suggest anti-waste solutions for reusing ingredients and composing associated recipes and baskets. The robot is connected to the site’s search engine and offers customers lists of products related to what they are discussing, right up until they make their purchase.

The generative AI is also used to enrich Carrefour brand product sheets, with more than 2000 product now online. This is the result of work undertaken by OpenAI technology in describing products and providing customers with more information. Ultimately, Carrefour wants to use this technology for all of it product sheets.

Finally, Carrefour has started using generative AI for its internal purchasing processes. This solution is currently being developed alongside teams from the non-retail purchasing division and will help them with their everyday tasks – such as drafting invitations to tender and analysing quotes.

These solutions are the result of a collaboration with Bain & Company and Microsoft, partners of OpenAI. They use Microsoft’s OpenAI Azure service to access OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology. At the same time, they are able to leverage all of Microsoft Azure’s data security, reliability and confidentiality features, to ensure compliance with GDPR (general data protection regulation).

“Thanks to our digital and data culture, we have already turned a corner when it comes to artificial intelligence. Generative AI will enable us to enrich the customer experience and profoundly transform our working methods. Integrating OpenAI technologies into what we do is an amazing opportunity for Carrefour. By pioneering the use of generative AI, we want to be one step ahead and invent the retail of tomorrow”, Alexandre Bompard, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Carrefour Group.

Baidu Ranks Top In Chinese ChatGPT-Style Chatbot Tests

Baidu’s Ernie Bot ranked highest in Xinhua Institute tests of chatbots that have been made available in recent months by Chinese tech firms seeking to compete with ChatGPT.

Xinhua Institute, a think tank affiliated with the Xinhua news agency, said its tests found Ernie Bot led Alibaba’s Tongyi Qianwen, SparkDesk from voice recognition firm iFlytek, and SenseChat from image recognition company SenseTime.

But the Baidu chatbot still trailed Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s latest GPT-4 and GPT-3.5, which powered the version of ChatGPT released to the public last November.

The researchers tested general capabilities such as basic language skills, logical reasoning and subject knowledge in fields such as mathematics, physics, finance and literature.

A lawyer used ChatGPT to prepare a court filing

A lawyer who relied on ChatGPT to prepare a court filing on behalf of a man suing an airline is now all too familiar with the artificial intelligence tool's shortcomings — including its propensity to invent facts.

While ChatGPT can be useful to professionals in numerous industries, including the legal profession, it has proved itself to be both limited and unreliable. In this case, the AI invented court cases that didn't exist, and asserted that they were real.
