EU and UK have reached a post-Brexit trade deal

The EU and UK have reached a post-Brexit trade deal, ending months of disagreements over fishing rights and future business rules.

At a Downing Street press conference, Boris Johnson said: "We have taken back control of our laws and our destiny."

The text of the agreement has yet to be released, but the PM claimed it was a "good deal for the whole of Europe".

The UK is set to exit EU trading rules next Thursday - a year after officially leaving the 27 nation bloc.

It will mean big changes for business, with the UK and EU forming two separate markets, and the end of free movement.

New UK Covid strain found in two returnees

Health authorities said on Wednesday that the new UK coronavirus variant has been found in Hong Kong.

After testing 11 samples from those returning from Britain recently, two of them – both from students – revealed the same new variant as that reported in the UK.

One of the students, 14, is still being treated in hospital while the other, who's 17, has been discharged. Authorities are following up on their close contacts.

"These two are the first two cases we've found in Hong Kong that have a new variant gene," said Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the Communicable Disease Branch of the Centre for Health Protection.

"According to the UK reports, they may be more infectious and a small proportion of Covid in general may have a very long incubation period, more than 14 days. That's why we're implementing 21 days' rule for those coming back from the UK just to make sure they won't spread (the virus) to the community."

Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action (the “Charter”) under the United Nations Climate Change

Crystal has been working relentlessly to reduce carbon emission under the third Global 5-year Sustainability Targets and planning to tackle climate risk holistically. In 2020, the Company completed a study to develop a roadmap for long-term carbon reduction. In 2019, a rooftop solar energy system consisting of around 600kW was installed in the intimate factory in Vietnam, anticipating to reduce the emissions by approximately 500 tCO2e every year. Crystal International plans to progressively scale up the adoption of renewable energy in all operating countries in the foreseeable future.

Government advisers say Hong Kong should be carbon neutral by 2050

The report from the Council for Sustainable Development, which advises the government on environmental matters, drew on more than 71,000 responses to a public engagement exercise in June last year to formulate 55 recommendations covering sectors such as energy generation, transport and urban design.

“It is not easy to achieve a net zero carbon target by 2050, but the council thinks it is a responsible and appropriate choice,”  Beijing had already announced it would cut all of China’s greenhouse emissions by 2060, while Japan and South Korea have both recently said they would be carbon neutral by 2050.

Hong Kong Air Pollutant Emission Inventory - Carbon Monoxide

Chart for 2001-2018 Carbon Monoxide (CO) Emissions

Legend for Carbon Monoxide (CO) Emissions Chart

See Data

Relative Significance

Between 2001 and 2018, CO emissions decreased by 24% which were mainly caused by the decline in emissions from the road transport sector.  Road transport and navigation sectors were two major sources of CO emissions, accounting for 50% and 27% of the total CO emissions in 2018, respectively.

During the same period, the gap between the CO concentration levels measured at the EPD's roadside and ambient air quality monitoring stations have narrowed, indicating that vehicular CO emissions have been reduced.

Japan to bet big on hydrogen to meet 2050 zero-emission goal

TOKYO -- Japan will boost the amount of power it plans to generate using hydrogen, looking to burn about 10 million tons annually by 2030, roughly equivalent to the output of more than 30 nuclear reactors.

The new target is being set to allow Japan to reach zero net carbon emissions by 2050, a goal set by Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga in October.

While the plan is to utilize solar and wind energy to reduce the country's carbon footprint, the output of those sources varies with the weather, so existing power plants would still be needed. If instead noncarbon-emitting hydrogen can be used as fuel, greenhouse gas emissions can be cut even further. In addition, excess power generated from renewable sources when weather conditions are optimal can be used to produce stores of hydrogen.
