Create a WordPress site Azure App Service

WordPress is an open source Content Management System (CMS) used by over 40% of the web to create websites, blogs, and other applications. WordPress can be run on a few different Azure services: AKS, Virtual Machines, Azure Container Apps and Azure App Service. For a full list of WordPress options on Azure, see WordPress on Azure Marketplace.

In this quickstart, you'll learn how to create and deploy your first WordPress site to Azure App Service on Linux with Azure Database for MySQL - Flexible Server using the WordPress Azure Marketplace item by App Service. This quickstart uses the Standard tier for your app and a Burstable, B2s tier for your database, and incurs a cost for your Azure Subscription. For pricing, visit App Service pricing, Azure Database for MySQL pricing, Content Delivery Network pricing, and Azure Blob Storage pricing.

To complete this quickstart, you need an Azure account with an active subscription. Create an account for free.

Create WordPress site using Azure portal

  1. To start creating the WordPress site, browse to https://portal.azure.com/#create/WordPress.WordPress.
  2. In the Basics tab, under Project details, make sure the correct subscription is selected. Select Create new resource group and type myResourceGroup for the name.
  3. Under Hosting details, select a Region you want to serve your app from, then type a globally unique name for your web app. Under Hosting plans, select Standard. Select Change plan to view features and price comparisons.
  4. Under WordPress setup, choose your preferred Site Language, then type an Admin Email, Admin Username, and Admin Password. The Admin Email is used for WordPress administrative sign-in only. Clear the Enable multisite checkbox.
  5. Select the Advanced tab. If you're unfamiliar with an Azure CDN, Azure Front Door, or Blob Storage, then clear the checkboxes. For more details on the Content Distribution options, see WordPress on App Service.
  6. Select the Review + create tab. After validation runs, select the Create button at the bottom of the page to create the WordPress site.
  7. Browse to your site URL and verify the app is running properly. The site may take a few minutes to load. If you receive an error, allow a few more minutes then refresh the browser.
  8. To access the WordPress Admin page, browse to /wp-admin and use the credentials you created in the WordPress setup step.

How to speed up your WordPress website - WP Super Cache

WP Super Cache generates static html files from your dynamic WordPress blog. After a html file is generated your webserver will serve that file instead of processing the comparatively heavier and more expensive WordPress PHP scripts.

99% of your visitors will be served static html files. One cached file can be served thousands of times. Other visitors will be served custom cached files tailored to their visit. If they are logged in, or have left comments those details will be displayed and cached for them.

The plugin serves cached files in 3 ways (ranked by speed):

Expert. The fastest method is by using Apache mod_rewrite (or whatever similar module your web server supports) to serve “supercached” static html files. This completely bypasses PHP and is extremely quick. If your server is hit by a deluge of traffic it is more likely to cope as the requests are “lighter”. This does require the Apache mod_rewrite module (which is probably installed if you have custom permalinks) and a modification of your .htaccess file which is risky and may take down your site if modified incorrectly.

Simple. Supercached static files can be served by PHP and this is the recommended way of using the plugin. The plugin will serve a “supercached” file if it exists and it’s almost as fast as the mod_rewrite method. It’s easier to configure as the .htaccess file doesn’t need to be changed. You still need a custom permalink. You can keep portions of your page dynamic in this caching mode.

WP-Cache caching. This is mainly used to cache pages for known users, URLs with parameters and feeds. Known users are logged in users, visitors who leave comments or those who should be shown custom per-user data. It’s the most flexible caching method and slightly slower. WP-Cache caching will also cache visits by unknown users if supercaching is disabled. You can have dynamic parts to your page in this mode too. This mode is always enabled but you can disable caching for known users, URLs with parameters, or feeds separately. Set the constant “DISABLE_SUPERCACHE” to 1 in your wp-config.php if you want to only use WP-Cache caching.

WordPress Blog Tool Publishing Platform CMS

WordPress started in 2003 when Mike Little and Matt Mullenweg created a fork of b2/cafelog. The need for an elegant, well-architected personal publishing system was clear even then. Today, WordPress is built on PHP and MySQL, and licensed under the GPLv2. It is also the platform of choice for over 43% of all sites across the web.

The WordPress open source project has evolved in progressive ways over time—supported by skilled, enthusiastic developers, designers, scientists, bloggers, and more. WordPress provides the opportunity for anyone to create and share, from handcrafted personal anecdotes to world-changing movements.

WordPress.com will pay the transfer fee for the first million domains that move away from the Google service. It has been a domain name provider for over a decade and notes how “you don’t even need a site or hosting plan to manage your domains with us.” This offer started yesterday and comes as there are about 10 million domains hosted on Google Domains.

Embed Google Reviews in WordPress

To embed Google Reviews in WordPress, you’re going to need a few things:

Google Business Profile listing

Google Reviews WordPress plugin

Google Places API key (depending on the plugin)

Google Business Profile Listing

First, you’ll probably want a Google Business Profile listing where customers can leave reviews in the first place.

While you can embed Google Reviews from any listing (even those you don’t control), setting up your own Google Business Profile listing will give you more control over your business’s profile in Google.

Because this profile is where customers will leave the reviews that you embed, you’ll want to put your best foot forward. By creating your profile, you’ll be able to add pictures, edit business details, share updates, and more.

To create your listing, you can go to the Google Business Profile page and follow the instructions.

Alternatively, if Google has already automatically created a listing for your business, you can claim it by clicking the “Own this business?” link that appears on the listing in Google.

Google Reviews WordPress Plugin

Once you have your Google Business Profile listing, you can use a dedicated Google Reviews WordPress plugin to embed reviews from that listing in your WordPress site.

You can find a number of free options that will embed reviews for you, though most also offer premium versions that add more features.
